EP Info Day Press Release 14 October 2013

EUROPA DONNA – The European Breast Cancer Coalition, in collaboration with Ruban de l’Espoir – Ribbon of Hope and other organisations, is holding its annual Breast Health Day Information Day event at the European Parliament on 15 October. The aim is to spread the Breast Health Day message ‘Make Good Choices for your Breast Health’ to parliamentarians and other policy makers so that women of all ages are aware of the benefits lifestyle choices can have on their future breast health.

The President of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz, has expressed full EU support of this event by offering it the “high patronage” of the European Parliament. Official speeches will be given by the President or his representatives on 15 October.

At an exhibition on the day, EUROPA DONNA representatives will distribute flyers to MEPs to promote the Breast Health Day message and to raise awareness of the important steps that can be taken to prevent breast cancer later in life. In the afternoon, a conference and debate session on “nutrition and sport” facilitated by Sport and Citizenship will present the latest findings on nutrition and physical activity in reducing risk of breast cancer and helping in the recovery process. A debate with parliamentarians will follow.

EUROPA DONNA is one of seven organisations involved in the events.

EUROPA DONNA holds Breast Health Day on 15 October to disseminate information about breast health and to raise awareness of prevention and early detection of breast cancer among women and girls across Europe. Being physically active, eating a well-balanced diet and avoiding weight gain are three simple but crucial lifestyle choices that can positively impact the future of a woman’s breast health. Excess body weight and physical inactivity deserve special attention, since they account for 25-33% of all breast cancer cases. A growing body of evidence shows the link between healthy lifestyle choices and a lower risk of developing breast cancer.

EUROPA DONNA – The European Breast Cancer Coalition – is an independent, non-profit organisation whose members are affiliated groups from countries throughout Europe. EUROPA DONNA works to raise public awareness of breast cancer and to mobilise the support of European women in pressing for improved breast cancer education, appropriate screening, optimal treatment and care and increased funding for research. Member countries currently number 46.

About Breast Health Day
EUROPA DONNA – The European Breast Cancer Coalition established Breast Health Day on 15 October as an annual reminder to girls and women in Europe about the importance of lifestyle factors that can influence their future breast health and help prevent breast cancer, and the role of early detection in fighting breast cancer. Breast Health Day was first celebrated on 15 October 2008 by EUROPA DONNA in its member countries across Europe and beyond. An Information Event is held every year at the European Parliament in Brussels to raise awareness among parliamentarians of the importance of breast health and policies that help promote it.

About the Ruban de l’Espoir
The Ruban de l’Espoir – Ribbon of Hope – began in 2008 as a result of French associations creating a unifying event that would use different activities, such as lectures, debates, films, exhibitions, art events and workshops, to discuss a variety of themes, from primary prevention, screening and patient support to medical research. These different activities take place to coincide with the arrival of the Ruban de l’Espoir delegation, which completes the route from city to city by car and carries the Ruban de l’Espoir flame, as a symbol linking the associations.
